Difference Between Pipe and Tube

Many people find it difficult to judge key difference between pipe and tube. You won’t be one of them after going through this article. We hope you will get enough information about their differences after reading this article.

It can be challenging to distinguish between a pipe and a tube if you ever visit a hardware shop. It is one of the fundamental questions asked by the customers. Understanding the difference between pipe and tube is important. Both of the terms are used interchangeably, but in the manufacturing sense, both of them are different.

Pipe and tube

One of the main differences between the pipe and the tube is the ordering of the material. In the tubes, outside diameter matters the most as they are used in medical equipment. This outside thickness determines the durability and stability of the equipment. Simultaneously, the pipes are used to transfer the liquid and gasses from one place to another, so in their case, the length matters. The circular shape of the pipes gives them the strength to bear the pressure.

 Pipes:

Pipes are used for daily household purposes. The unit for measuring the pipes is nominal pipe size, and NPS is a North American unit for the measurements. Another factor in the measurements of the pipe is wall thickness. Here, one thing must be mentioned: the inside of the pipe is always smaller than the outside of the pipe. This difference results in thickness. This thickness, in turn, gives strength to the pipe.

 Tubes:

Tubes are used the most in the medical field. So they need to be durable and long-lasting. It helps them to be used for a longer period of time. This durability comes from their outside thickness.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Pipe and Tube.

The factors mentioned in the above two headings are the differences in a more general view. But both the structures, i.e., pipe and tube, share many differences in a peculiar view. Some of the main differences are given below.

·         Shape

The shape of tubes and pipes is usually round, but the shape of the tube can differ as well. Pipes are always around, but the tube may be of rectangle, square, or round shape.

·         Measurements

The tubes are ordered, keeping the outside diameter and wall thickness in mind. The ordering of pipes is done via nominal pipe size, through the pipe size, also called the nominal diameter and the wall thickness (schedule diameter).

·         Telescoping Abilities

One of the most significant plus points of the tubes is their telescoping abilities. Telescoping means fitting one tube into another if the distance is too long for one tube to cover. Square tubing is preferred more for telescoping. The application of tube telescoping can be seen in the curtain rods, and on the other hand, the pipes cannot be telescoped.

·         Rigidity

Pipes are rigid structures, and they cannot be molded from one form to another without the use of some special equipment. Tubes that are made of brass and copper cannot be molded as well. But all other tubes can convert into the desired form just with a bit of effort.

·         Size

The size of the pipe is larger while that of the tube is smaller. It is because of the two main reasons.

  1. Requirement of work
  2. Telescoping abilities

Pipes are used to transferring the fluids from one place to another. This distance between the two places may be much longer. So the pipes are made of more considerable lengths. Secondly, the telescoping abilities of pipes are also not that good. Meanwhile, the tubes are used for smaller lengths, and if for some reason the length requirement increases, the telescoping ability of the tubes will do the job for you.

·         Strength

Tubes need to be more durable as they are implied in sensitive machinery. That is why their outer diameter is made thicker. This thickness gives them durability. Pipes are not that durable as compared to pipes.

·         Material

Different metal types are used for the construction of tubes and pipes. Tubes can be both hot rolled as well as cold rolled. Here it is important to know the difference between the hot rolled and cold rolled. Hot rolled steel is first heated and is cooled after that at room temperature.

Cold-rolled steel is considered to be more complex and more robust than hot-rolled ones. It is because once the metal is cooled, then it becomes stronger than before. Hence its resistance against any deformation increases, many folds. After that, they are rolled again; however, both the materials can be galvanized.

Applications of Pipes and Tubes:

Tubes and pipes are used for different works, and they have different applications. Tubes are primarily used in medical equipment and construction works. In their case, the outside diameter matters the most as it accounts for their durability. Pipes are mainly used to transfer the liquid and gasses from one place to another. One typical example is the natural gas system in your kitchen. Pipes are also used to water the plants in the garden. The pipes are circular. This circular shape helps the pipe in bearing any pressure.
