Alloy steels are designated by AISI four-digit numbers. These alloys are highly reactive to mechanical and heat treatments than carbon steels. They contain different types of steels with compositions exceeding the limitations of B, C, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, Cr, and Va in the carbon steels.

The important part of AISI 4130 steel is that it contains chromium and molybdenum as strengthening agents. The amount of carbon content is low, and hence it can be welded with no trouble. Properties of Alloy steels (including 4130 material) vary over carbon steels due to constituents such as boron, carbon, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, silicon, and vanadium and having chromium contents less than 4%. The major alloying elements added to AISI 4130 are:

  • Manganese content >1.65%
  • Silicon content >0.5%
  • Copper content >0.6%
