Steel Angle Basics: Angle Types and Application

The Basics of Steel Angle

The modern applications of popular buildings and large warehouses require reliable steel angles for supporting the structural units in the construction. Steel angle is otherwise also famous for its use as an iron angle in manufacturing sectors.

It is an L-shaped steel section of varying lengths. It comprises two legs that hold together straight at a 90-degree angle. This perpendicular formation thereby makes it an angle.

The composition on the contrary comprises hot-rolled carbon steel. Similarly, low alloy steel is also a famous raw material for its construction. There, however, is no limit in terms of its size and dimensions.

This is because manufacturers welcome customize designs, dimensions, and lengths as per customers’ requirements. Therefore, different sizes are readily available.

What Are the Basics of Steel Angle?

As we have discussed that steel angle is a hot-rolled carbon or low alloy steel. This, however, apart from steel angles, steel and aluminum are the most common metals for production. There nevertheless are other metals as well.

This hence includes brass as well. Making an angle out of any metal, there requires a metal sheet. The steel sheet, by manufacturer, gets a fold into an iron angle by pressing it. There but exists variation in terms of iron angle in several ways. These variations come from two different perspectives.

The one relates to the shapes and the other carries material variations.  There nonetheless are other variations as well. This includes cut-out size, holes and perforations, coating material, overall finish, and many others. It, therefore, is long steel that contains two verticals mutually sides. Such steel angles are anyhow the most basic form of angles.

This is because steel angle is simple in construction and are 90 degrees to each other with equal size and length. The tools that the manufacturer requires are very basic and easy to available.

These alongside it is also inexpensive. The basic structure of steel angle carries 90-degree leg angles with 4 inches of basic height. The thickness of the basic steel angle usually carries 3/16 inches. Similarly, for 9 inches of a leg height there requires a thickness of 0.075 inches. On the contrary, for aluminum basic angles there however are separate measures.

Furthermore, for thin legs, the hemmed legs can serve the purpose with existing tools. Most of the time however the length of the sides is the same. But, upon customers’ request, manufacturers do make unequal length angles. To these angles that are more than 90 degrees in steel angles we, therefore, call these Vees.

Variants in a steel angle that a company manufactures

The popularity of this steel angle is famous for its wide usage. The division of angle is in two terms. This hence includes HSLA and mild carbon steel angle. HSLA consists of A572 steel material. However, a mild carbon consists of A36, S235JR, SS400, ST37, SS490, q235, etc. steel raw material. The polished-finish is there which divides into three types that of black which is off treatment and then there is hot-dip-galvanized and painted ones. Whilst an HSLA carbon steel angle comprises two basic variants in material as A572 and A588.

Variants of steel angles

In the current time, steel angle and aluminum angle iron are gaining popularity because of their multiple uses. On the contrary, brass metal is also a famous product. Since it is a simple sheet metal that can be folded in a desired shape and form. It can easily transform angle iron. It certainly makes use of certain cuts and shapes. The variety of steel material and types are:

A36 Steel Angle Bar (Hot-rolled)

A36 bar is the most widely used structural material in the construction industry. This is because this steel bar is very economical. The manufacturers hence produce A36 angle by rolling a pre-heated bloom of steel into angular shape bars. The most prevalent angle thereby in A36 remains 90-degree.

However, upon further request, the manufacturer does comply with the demands as well. The depth of the leg determines the angle of the bar. The common uses of this type of angle are famous for constructing communication towers, workshops, warehouses, power towers, construction of steel buildings, and many other engineering projects. Apart from these uses, the A36 steel or iron angle also serves on industrial shelves as well as the restaurant tables for tea and coffee.

Infra-build (The center of steel production)

Steel center manufacturers in Australia have a variety of structures available. It, therefore, excels in the excessive production of steel which is available in different sizes and metals such as aluminum, brass, bronze, copper.

This thereby helps in boosting different on-going projects. The most popular, galvanized steel which is abundantly making rounds in the market has a multi-purpose approach to it. It serves as an energy booster of the projects. Furthermore, when combined with a tint of zinc it gives an effect of a superior corrosion resistance over standard carbon steel angle.

A588 High Strength HSLA

A588 is a high quality yet low carbon steel angle that covers a minimal ratio of alloy. Alloy therefore in this steel angle contains copper, chromium as well as nickel. The addition of alloy elements thereby adds more constructive properties to the steel angle.

Ultimately, this further improves the application spectrum of A588. The addition of alloy furthermore strengthens the material in terms of its yield. The overall strength of the iron angle increases to 50ksi. Additionally, the tensile strength of the material raises to 70ksi.

The addition of copper helps in increasing the corrosion resistive properties. This provides the material, a longer period, and immunity from rust.

General use of Low carbon Steel Angle ST37-2

ST37-2, a carbon steel angle, carries three basic types of surface treatment. This includes galvanized pre-painted and black surface treatments.

This angle however is not as effective in a longer period as its contender A588. This material doesn’t contain any optimum amount of copper. For this reason, hence the material easily gets rusty in a few days.

However, to protect the material from getting corrosion, the hot-dip galvanized and pre-painting helps in this regard. The content of the impurity in the steel bar only contains carbon. The ratio nevertheless remains as slow as 0.20%. this ratio is similar to that of other steel bars as S235JR and Q235.

A529 Steel Angle Bars- Structural and Engineering Use

A529 is a carob-manganese steel angle that is a widely-used item for large scale engineering and structural applications. The high quantity of manganese both in A529-A550 hence makes it a suitable component for the construction of high-rise steel buildings.

Furthermore, for the construction of large bridges, rivets, and bolts, fabrication as well as the high-end machinery. In comparison to that of the A36, this material carries 0.2% of copper. The addition of copper thereby increases the resistive characteristic against harsh weather and corrosion. The material however is readily available in a variety of sizes and lengths.

A572 Steel Angle Bars- High Yield Strength of 50ksi

A572 is another steel angle bar that is high in strength as it carries a low alloy. This also gets a label of Columbian and vanadium steel sections.

The material carries much better characteristics than carbon steel A36. The amount of strength, yield as well the tensile strength of A572 is way greater than that of A36. Furthermore, the welding, molding, machining as well as forming is much easier.

Applications

The benefits gained from the production of steel angle bars are enormous. It helps in the building of bridges, warehouses, shelves, cable towers, power towers, equipment, etc.

Whereas on the other hand, it has desired use in the making of bed frames, chairs, benches, fencing posts, frames for supporting air conditioners, coffee tables, etc.
